Thankful - Day 1

A lot of people start out with the 30 days of being thankful leading up to Thanksgiving. But since I'm a little late (almost a month late) I will give you, my readers- 7 days of being Thankful ;o)

Day 1: I am thankful for being able to give the love of my heart.

It doesn't matter what religion you are from or what you believe, when others do not have and we can help it's in our human nature to be able to give. Day before yesterday the princess and I went shopping to pick up some soups and spices to restock my cabinets. We were coming out of the store and as I was grabbing my bag and her car seat, I saw an older woman who looked almost lost as she started to rummage through the garbage can.

Normally I don't talk to strangers but something just didn't feel right about this, the older woman was looking almost distressed and frantic as if she had lost something. So as she reminded me of my own grandmother, I walked over and asked her if she had lost anything or needed help finding something. She looked up from the garbage can and with tears welling in her eyes told me that she hadn't lost anything but she hadn't eaten in almost two day.

She gave me her story about how she had lost her job because she could no longer physically do the work, she had no family or children to go to and her apartment had kicked her out because she could not find a replacement job to pay the bills. I asked her about the homeless shelter but it was full the night before because of how cold it had gotten and she didn't know of anywhere else to go. So she was living out of her car with the little gas that she had and now she was looking for food anywhere she could.

My heart was breaking as I stood there listening to her story, I helped her in finding a place to stay -- a woman's shelter she didn't know about. I stood there and called them so she could talk to them and the could get her information. They were right up the street so she said she could drive. I gave her the few bags of food that I had purchased that would not go bad and the $5.00 I had left in my pocket.

The look in her eyes told me enough as she kept thanking me for my help and I think to myself that what if I wouldn't have been there that day what would have happened to her? But then again, sometimes God works in mysterious ways to lead you to a better understanding make sure that you remain humble about your life. So today I am thankful for being able to give what I can even if that is just a smile to others, because as small as a smile might be it's still an act of charity and it's something from my heart for others to have.
